“The Bellissima Guesthouse”
In 1916, David Lahey, the forward-thinking owner of Lahey’s Sawmill, set out to create something unique in Canungra: The Bellissima Guesthouse. The guesthouse was built in response to the region’s growing prominence as a hub for travelers and businessmen associated with the sawmill industry, Bellissima was an architectural gem that brought both elegance and modernity to the quaint township. Beyond its initial purpose as a guesthouse, Bellissima quickly became a point of pride for the community and a symbol of hospitality in rural Queensland.
Named after the ship that carried David Lahey and his family from Ireland to their new Australian homeland, Bellissima Guesthouse embodied a sense of history and a family legacy of resilience and adventure. However, its charm wasn’t limited to its name; Bellissima Guesthouse stood out for its forward-thinking amenities that few establishments of the time could claim. It was one of the first in Canungra to offer running water, an independent electricity supply, and a septic system—features that transformed guests’ experiences and set the bar for other accommodations in the region.
Bellissima became known as one of Queensland’s finest hotels, drawing guests from across the country who appreciated its thoughtful touches. Visitors enjoyed well-ventilated rooms that offered a refreshing escape from the subtropical heat, cozy wood fires that warmed the space in winter, and a dedicated tennis court that encouraged leisurely recreation. For travelers, it was not only a comfortable place to rest but also a touchpoint with a burgeoning Canungra community that thrived on innovation, hospitality, and family heritage.
In 1927, over a decade after David Lahey built the iconic Bellissima Guesthouse, the property found new life in Canungra under its new owners. They transformed it into Canungra’s first hotel, adding an extension to the original building to serve as a bar—a welcoming addition that would soon become a cornerstone of the community’s social life. The following year, in 1928, the property was granted the township’s very first liquor license, establishing Bellissima as the first licensed establishment in Canungra and setting it apart as a hub of hospitality and relaxation.
Bellisima becomes Canungra Hotel
However, the hotel’s journey was not without challenges. In early 1937, a devastating fire swept through the building, bringing its bustling operations to a sudden halt. Determined to preserve the legacy of Bellissima, the new owner, Mr. Shaw, decided to rebuild. Within months, Bellissima was lovingly restored and, by October of that same year, the doors reopened, inviting locals and travelers alike to experience the warmth and charm of Canungra’s beloved hotel once more.
As the 1940s approached, the once-thriving Lahey’s Sawmill was coming to an end, and much of the region’s timber had been harvested, leading to the closure of many sawmills. With this shift, The Bellissima Guest House saw a change in its guests, transitioning from accommodating business travelers tied to the sawmill industry to welcoming leisure visitors eager to explore the natural beauty of Canungra and surrounding attractions like Lamington National Park. The hotel became a destination in itself, a retreat for those seeking respite in the countryside, drawn by the tranquillity of the area and the warm, rustic ambiance of the Bellissima.
Over the years, Bellissima stood as a testament to Canungra’s adaptability and resilience, evolving from a traveler’s haven to the community’s first hotel, and ultimately into a cherished retreat for generations of visitors. Its rich history, marked by resilience and rebirth, captures the spirit of Canungra—a small town with a big heart, ready to welcome all who seek a place to pause and enjoy the country’s serene beauty.
Throughout the years, many owners have passed through the Canungra Hotel, each leaving their unique mark on its character. Yet, it remains an enduring icon, honoring the Lahey family and the pioneering spirit and legacy of those who shaped Canungra township in the Scenic Rim into what it is today.
